Match report Allscott 3 XI v Whittington 2 XI - Bowring Park, Wellington.

This week Allscott 3rd XI welcomed Whittington 2 XI to The Bowring Park, Wellington. Weather conditions were extremely wet after the prolonged rain which continued almost right up until the start of the match. The conditions dictated that for any play to go ahead would require the use of the all weather wicket, which was agreed between the teams in a match reduced to 35 overs and further interupted by the weather. Whittington won the toss and opted to bat first, putting on a respectable 154 for 9 from their 35 overs. Congratulations to Whittington's O. Davies (36) and M. Ruscoe (39) who both batted well and were only dismissed as a result of two inspired pieces of fielding.

In the absence of some experienced players, including captain Les Pritchard, the onus fell on the youngsters to deliver for the club, which they did in fine style. The experienced Rob Beckett, Kevin Davey, and Neil Lewis bowled good spells, ably and well supported by youngsters, Grants Brookes and Kieran Berry, who both weighed in with wickets during their bowling spells. Despite the team being reduced to ten players on the morning of the match the fielding was excellent, as is usually the case, with the excellent Shane Hoofe performing the work of two players, covering extended areas of the ground in great style. Ian Watson directed the team admirably from behind the stumps in what proved to be an inspired team fielding performance.

The run chase started well with openers Stu Berry and Neil Lewis putting 20 on the board before the end of the third over and the inevitable rain. The break seemed to upset the batting ryhthm with Lewis out shortly after the re-start, bringing youngster Ryan Hoofe to the crease. Hoofe and Berry pushed the total past 100 before Hoofe was bowled (17) and Berry (57) fell shortly afterwards after dragging onto his own stumps. The responsibility ultimately fell on Davey and Kieran Berry to see out the last two overs under intense pressure with fielders all round the bat and some unsporting comments directed towards Berry, in particular, between balls. They both saw the match through to a draw, finishing on 107 for 4 from 35 overs.

The club's youngsters were superb and take great credit in their personal contributions towards the result achieved by the team and should feel proud of themselves.
